Place Based Curriculum

A place-based education is an approach that takes a school's geographic location as a context for learning.

Place-based education can help to localise your curriculum by giving students a sense of context and affiliation with their surrounding environment, and community.

A place-based curriculum lets students examine their knowledge, skills, and abilities within a local context / from where they stand. It helps give meaning to what they are learning in the classroom.

A place-based pedagogy takes into account the tikanga / customs within the local community.

Principles of Successful Place-Based Education

1. Learning takes place on-site in the schoolyard, and in the local community and environment.

2. Learning focuses on local themes, systems, and content.

3. Learning experiences contribute to the community’s vitality and environmental quality and support the community’s role in fostering global environmental quality.

4. Learning is supported by strong and varied partnerships with local organizations, agencies, businesses, and the government.

5. Learning is interdisciplinary.
